Topic 20 Kyiv
Kyiv is the capital city of Ukraine. It is located in the north central part of the country on the picturesque banks of the great Ukrainian river - the Dnipro River.
By the ancient legend, Kyiv was founded by three brothers Kiy, Shchek, Khoriv and their sister Lybid. They were surprised by the beauty of the Dnipro’s hills, stopped to settle here and called the town in honour of the eldest brother Kiy.

Kyiv, one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, is more than 1500 years old. It was called “Mother of Russian towns” and it played an important part in the development of the Slavic civilization.

Today Kyiv is one of the biggest industrial, scientific and educational centres of Eastern Europe. It is home to many high-tech industries, higher educational institutions and world-famous historical landmarks. The city has an extensive infrastructure and highly developed system of public transport, including the Kyiv Metro.

The capital of Ukraine is a cultural city. There are more than 30 museums, about 200 unique architectural monuments, 33 theatres, a lot of different art exhibitions. Kyiv is one of the greenest cities in the world; it has more than 60 parks. In spring and summer the city resembles one huge park. The city is extremely beautiful when its chestnut trees are in blossom.

There are many historical places in Kyiv, for example, St Sofia Cathedral, which was founded by Grand Duke of Kyiv Yaroslav the Wise in 1037 and became the main church of Kievan Rus.
Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, also known as Kyiv Monastery of the Caves, was founded in the 11th century. In 2007 it was named one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine. Many guests come to the city to visit St Michael’s Monastery or St Andrew’s Church, walk along Andriyivskiy Uzviz , buy some handmade souvenirs there.

The centre of Kiev is Independence Square; its main street is Khreshchatyk Street. They become a large outdoor party place at night during summer months, with thousands of people having a good time in nearby restaurants, clubs and outdoor cafes.

Kyiv is a magnificent city and you will never get bored there. A visit to Kyiv can be really unforgettable for everyone.
