GIRL WHO DYED HAIR HAS TO WEAR WIG FOR EXAMS

A rebellious 16-year -old is being forced to sit her GCSE exams wearing an ?8.99 wig because she broke a school rule forbidding strange hairstyles, Sabrina Cohen was told she would not be allowed to sit her GCSEs after dying her hair bright red. When she refused to return her hair to its normal dark brown colour she was given ? 10 from school funds to go out and buy a wig.

Sabrina dyed her hair after having a row with her mother and moving out to live with friends, Teachers at her school in Newport, Gwent, also found unacceptable the ring through her pierced lower lip and ordered her to hide it with a plaster.

After receiving the ? 1 0 she bought the ?8,99 wig to wear when she walks into the exam halls.

She said yesterday: '"It's stupid, They let me sit my exams wearing a wig but not my own hair. I can't see why red hair makes any difference to my ability to sit and pass exams".' The bright teenager is expected to get 11 A-star grades in her GCSEs at Bassaleg Comprehensive School.

Sabrina was allowed to carry on taking her GCSEs providing she wears the wig and plasters. She said, however: '"The wig gets in my eyes and the plasters get on my nerves and affect my concentration. I am really upset about it as my career is being put at risk over something silly".'

Sabrina hopes to study physics at university but she may now have to find a new school to study for her A levels. Dr Ian Carrero, the headmaster of Bassaleg, said that school rules prohibited "strange hair styles" and that the only piercings allowed were on earlobes, Strange hair styles could distract other pupils from getting on with their exams".'
