Тема уроку: Вивчення часу. Виконання вправ.

Мета уроку: навчитися правильно володіти граматичним та лексичним матеріалом з теми "Час".

Хід уроку.

1. Привітання.

Hello, children. I'm glad to see you and start our lesson. Our topic today is "Learning Time". So let's begin our lesson!

2. Пояснення граматичного матеріалу.

There are two main ways of telling the time:

1. Formal way - tell hours and then minutes.

Example: 8:25 - eight twenty-five

If we need to tell 01-09 minutes we say "ou" instead of a "0".

Example: 12:05 - twelve ou five

2. Popular way - tell minutes and then hours, using special prepositions.

Example: 9.20 - twenty minutes past nine

               9.50 - ten minutes to ten

There are some peculiarities for certain time:

15 minutes - a quarter (a quarter to/a quarter past)

30 minutes - half (half past...)

REMEMBER! We can say "o'clock" only with full hour.

Example: 12.00 - twelve o'clock, BUT 12.30 - half past twelve.

As usual, we use twelve-hour clock in English.

Example: 17.00 - five o'clock, 19.15 - quarter past seven, 21.30 - half past nine.

We can use words midnight/midday/noon instead of 12.

Example: 12.00 - midday/noon

               00.00 - midnight

Time-phrases:

Before 12 o'clock noon - in the morning

After 12 o'clock noon - in the afternoon

You can also use phrases in the evening, at night depending on your sense of time.

For example: 4:30 - a half past four in the morning or a half past four at night.

There are also some formal expressions to tell the time before or after noon:

- a.m. (ante meridiem) - before noon

- p.m. (post meridiem) - after noon.

Example: 4:30 a.m. or 4.30 p.m.

How will you ask the time?

There are several ways of asking the time. You can use the following questions:

1. What time is it?

2. Do you have the time?

3. Could you tell the time, please?

Вправа 1. Answer my questions please.

1. What time is it now?

2. When did you get up today?

3. When did you come to school?

4. When did your lessons begin?

5. When will you come home?

6. When will you go to sleep?

Вправа 2. Now I want you to tell about your day using time expressions. Here is an example for you:

Every morning I get up at a quarter past nine - nine fifteen in the morning. I have my breakfast at half past nine and then take the bus to school. The bus usually arrives at ten o’clock. Sometimes it is late and arrives at five minutes past ten but I normally get to school at ten thirty.

The first lesson begins at forty minutes past ten and the last ends in the afternoon at two o’clock. I usually have lunch at school – at twelve fifteen when we have a long break. I come home at three o’clock or at a quarter to four if I stay to play football with my classmates after school. 

In the evening I watch TV, do my homework, wash and go to bed at ten o’clock. On Fridays I go to bed at eleven o’clock because I don’t need to wake up early on Saturday. Usually I get up at half past eleven or at twelve o’clock on weekdays.

 1. 3:45           a. 20 minutes to 5

 2. 4:40           b. 40 minutes to 9

 3. 1:50           c. 15 minutes to 4

 4. 6:35           d. 35 minutes to 12

 5. 11:25         e. 25 minutes to 7

Вправа 4. Look at the pictures and tell the time in all possible ways. For example: 10:30 – ten thirty – half past ten – thirty minutes to eleven.

Вправа 5. Вчитель роздає учням друкований матеріал.

Here are the clocks, but without time! Look at the picture and draw the arrows to show the correct time.

Вправа 6. Read the sentences correctly.

1. Today I woke up at 7.35 am and went fishing with my father.

2. My mother always comes home at 6 pm.

3. I like to watch the Funny Show at 5.15 in the evening.

4. At 2 o’clock in the afternoon I usually have dinner.

5. Sometimes I play football with my friends from 3 o’clock to 4.15 pm and come home not earlier than 4.55.

6. The show starts at 12.25 so we can have some ice-cream in café at 12 am.

7. My sister always gets up at 7.45 and does her morning exercises before school.
